There are many options for obtaining the needed stories for the course...
Option 1: (This option is free)
I can supply the needed stories via email in a .zip file if you email me and tell me which format you want. Available formats are:
1. Microsoft Word docx files
2. Adobe Acrobat .pdf files (formatted for printing on both sides of a page)
3. ePub files for eBook readers
4. Audiobook .mp3 files
(free downloads of every Sherlock Holmes story in .ePub format are available at
Option 2: This one is the best buy for Kindle users. It has all 60 official stories and 6 unofficial stories for 99 cents!
Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Collection
Option 3: This one is very good for paperback readers who do not mind rather small fonts.
It has 39 of the 60 Sherlock Holmes stories.
Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels and Short Stories, vol I
(Bantam Classics, 1987) - new paperback, $6.25.
Page size: 7" x 4"
Option 4: The hardcover version of the following book has somewhat larger fonts than the previous book and I find if easier to read (I haven't seen the paperback version and cannot speak to that). It has 14 Holmes stories including the eight we will read in class.
Sherlock Holmes: Selected Adventures (Illustrated)
(Ino Editions, 2017) new hardcover $14.99. Paperback $ 9.99.
Option 5: This is only for someone who wants the full Sherlock Holmes experience and has $30 - $35 to spend on books.
In 1967, Sherlock Holmes scholar William S. Baring-Gould published an annotated two volume set containing all of the Holmes stories, with story notes (with drawings and photographs) and also essays on Holmes, Watson, their 221B Baker St, appartment, Professor Moriarty, Conan Doyle and much more.
Each volume is 11" x 8.5" x 2" and weighs almost 4 lbs. The two volume set sells for about $170 new, but re-sellers often sell used copies in "very good" condition (strong bindings and covers, clean unmarked pages) for $30 to $35 (I bought a nice set a few months ago for $25).
If you are going the inexpensive Option 1, 2, or 3 route for the course, do that for now. I will be bringing a copy of Baring-Gould's book to class so you can see it. But if you are inclined towards the $15+ Option 4, you might want to think about this instead if you have an extra $20.
If you are interested in this you can email me and I will help you find a nice copy for a good price.
The Annotated Sherlock Holmes, 2 Volumes. 1,400 pages.
